ACTIONS: Use transit
In our modern world, we often have to go farther than is practical to walk, roll in a wheelchair, or bike—and sometimes steep hills, extreme weather, or physical challenges make those options unfeasible. When that’s the case, choose public transit: travel by bus, train, subway, ferry, or streetcar.
Though many transit fleets still rely on diesel fuel, it’s far more efficient to move dozens of people in one vehicle than it is for everyone to drive separately. As fleets electrify and grids become cleaner, transit is increasingly climate-friendly.
- Use transit to travel through a city or region. Check local websites or kiosks for schedules and rider information.
- Use trains or buses to travel longer distances. Check Amtrak, Greyhound, BoltBus, or other companies for options. Several websites let you search multiple bus lines, and some cities have specific sites for transportation options.
Go Further
- Urge your local elected officials and Congressional representatives to fund public transit investments, including high-speed rail.
- Support the electrification of bus fleets.
- Let your local officials know that transit access is a priority, routes need to serve all communities, and transit stops need to have accessible sidewalks and safe places to wait.
