ACTIONS: Work-related transportation

How employees commute to work and travel for work makes a big difference in climate emissions.

  • Charge for parking to encourage employees and guests not to drive alone.
  • Provide financial incentives for walking, biking, transit, and carpooling—even kayaking, if your location supports it!
  • Make it easier to use climate-friendly transportation options, with showers, lockers, transit passes, financial rewards, and bike maintenance rooms.
  • Provide resources for finding walking, biking, and transit routes or connecting with others to carpool, vanpool, or walk or bike together. Make carshare available during the day in case of unforeseen needs to pick up ill children or attend to other personal emergencies. (Many companies call this a “guaranteed ride home.”)
  • Convert your company fleet to electric vehicles, especially where renewable energy is available.
  • Combine trips, and carpool for efficiency.
  • Provide the time and flexibility employees need to bike or use transit to get to local meetings or appointments during the workday.
  • Maintain vehicles to keep them running efficiently.
  • Use the smallest vehicle that works for the job.
  • Schedule video conferences and conference calls instead of travel when possible.
  • Travel to conferences or regional meetings by train, car, or bus rather than airplanes whenever possible.
  • Don’t use a company jet. If you must fly, it’s much more efficient to fly on a commercial airline.
